Women's Basketball Drops 72-57 Decision to New York University

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior guard Lauren D’Ambrosio and sophomore guard Stephanie Huhn scored 16 points each to lead New York University to a 72-57 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday in a women’s basketball game at the Canavan Arena.

NYU (9-1) never trailed in the game.  D’Ambrosio scored five points as the Violets opened up a 9-2 lead with 16:35 left in the first half.  Stevens (2-5) never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.  NYU led by as many as 19 points (37-18) in the first half following one of D’Ambrosio’s four 3-pointers on the evening.

With back-to-back layups in the second half, Huhn gave the Violets their largest lead of the game, 59-33, with 12:07 remaining.  Four different NYU players scored in double figures.  In addition to D’Ambrosio and Huhn, freshman guards Katie Higier and Jennifer Brajevich scored 11 points each.  Senior Allison Herman and junior Cassandra Wiggins had eight points and 10 rebounds each.  The Violets shot 46.0 percent (29-for-63) from the floor.

Stevens used a late 11-4 run in the last five minutes to trim a 22-point deficit to 15.  For the game, junior guard Aracely Cruz (Union City, N.J./Union Hill) scored 16 points and recorded six steals.  Senior guard Mia Molfino (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) added 15 points on five 3-pointers.  Sophomore forward Lauren Bialko (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) scored a season-high 10 points.  The Ducks struggled from the floor as they connected on just 21 of 76 shots (27.6 percent).

Stevens returns to action on Thursday, January 9, when it opens Skyline Conference play with a 6 p.m. game at Old Westbury.
