NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Senior forward Betty Assefa (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) scored two goals and freshman forward Heather Dean (Renton, Wash./Charles A. Lindbergh) had three assists as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team earned a 6-0 win over Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) on Wednesday in a Skyline Conference game.
Stevens improves to 2-0 in Skyline play and 5-5 overall. Mount St. Mary drops to 1-2 in the conference and 1-7 overall.
Stevens received goals from four different players in building a 4-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Coralynn Jones (Stevensville, Mont./Stevensville) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Dean at 13:00 to put the Ducks ahead to stay.
Junior Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) converted a pass from freshman Heather Dinsmore (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) at 20:47. Sophomore Jaime Mehnert (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) and freshman Megan Legendre (O’Fallon, Ill./O’Fallon) scored in a span of three minutes late in the first half. It was the first career goal for Legendre.
Assefa accounted for both Stevens goals in the second half, scoring in the 47th minute and again in the 68th minute. Sophomore Lorrie Brabender (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) added two assists to bring her season total to seven. Dean leads the Ducks with eight assists.
Stevens held a 31-4 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior Rommy Guevara (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and freshman Erica Midttveit (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) each played a half in goal. Midttveit recorded the only save for the Ducks.
Stevens is back in action on Saturday, October 4, with a 1 p.m. home game against Widener University.
