Senior Sean Stevenson turned in a strong effort in his final game for the Ducks. |
MADISON, N.J. – Freshman Matt Sidie and sophomore Tyler Brisk scored second-half goals as Drew University earned a 2-0 win over Stevens Institute of Technology in the third round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship on Sunday at Doc Young Field.
Drew (19-1-2) advances to the quarterfinals where it will face Salisbury University next weekend at a site to be determined. Salisbury tied Messiah 0-0 on Saturday, but advanced on penalty kicks, 7-6. The shutout was the 16th straight for a Drew team that ranks first in Division III in scoring defense. Stevens (19-2-2) had its 18-game winning streak snapped in the loss. The Ducks, who entered the tournament as the fourth-highest scoring team in Division III had not been shut out since a 0-0 tie with Kean on September 10.
Drew held a 6-3 advantage in shots in a defensive first half. But the momentum swung the Rangers’ way early in the second half. After a flurry in the Stevens penalty area, Sidie fired a shot from the top of the box that was headed for the upper right corner. Stevens defender Nick Gkionis was issued a red card for an intentional hand ball on Sidie’s shot. Drew sophomore Tim Cordier’s penalty kick at the 53:23 mark hit the left post as the game remained scoreless, but the Ducks were forced to play short for the remaining 36 minutes of regulation.
Drew continued to apply pressure and finally broke through at the 66:00 mark. Stevens senior goalkeeper Sean Stevenson (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) denied the Rangers on back-to-back shots from close range, but he was left out of position after stopping a header by sophomore Derek Swanner and Sidie headed in the rebound to put Drew in front.
Drew added to its lead in the 78th minute. Senior Justin Breen sent a ball into the box from the back and Brisk beat a defender to the ball and headed a shot over Stevenson, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead.
Drew held a 16-6 advantage in shots including 10-3 in the second half while playing with an extra man. Stevens had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
