ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior guard Katie Dougherty scored a game-high 23 points, to lead the University of Scranton to a 69-28 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in the first round of the Hartwick College women's basketball tip-off tournament.
Scranton will meet Oneonta State in the championship game at 3 p.m. on Sunday while Stevens will face host Hartwick in the consolation game at 1 p.m. Oneonta State defeated Hartwick in the opening game, 77-67 in overtime.
Scranton used two big scoring runs to break the game open. The Lady Royals trailed 10-6 with 11:01 left in the first half following a free throw by Stevens junior Lauren Bialko (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove). Scranton closed out the first half by outscoring Stevens 18-3 to open up a 24-13 halftime lead. Dougherty had 12 of the Lady Royals' 18 points.
After falling behind to 16 points early in the second half, Stevens pulled to within 11 points, 37-26, on a layup by Bialko with 12:18 left. The Ducks were held to just one basket the rest of the way as Scranton outscored Stevens 32-2 over the final 12 minutes.
Scranton, limited to just 27.8 percent shooting in the first half (10-for-36), got hot in the second half, shoot 58.6 percent (17-for-29). Stevens shot 28.9 percent for the game (11-for-38) and was forced into 29 turnovers.
Stevens was led by senior guard Aracely Cruz (Union City, N.J./Union Hill) who had ten points and six rebounds. Bialko added nine points.
