Women's Basketball Drops 66-40 Decision to Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Laura Shockro scored a game-high 16 points to lead host Hartwick College to a 66-40 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday in the consolation game of the Holiday Inn Classic women’s basketball tournament.

Hartwick (1-1) never trailed in the game.  Stevens (0-2) trailed by just four points, 11-7, on a jumper by junior guard Lauren Bialko (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) with 8:45 left in the first half.  Hartwick then used a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to open up a 16-point lead.  Shockro began the run with a 3-pointer at the 8:29 mark.  Heather McGuerty scored, who finished with 11 points, scored the next five.

Stevens, which shot just 18.2 percent in the first half (4-for-22) made just one field goal in the final eight minutes as Hartwick opened up a 29-10 lead at halftime.  The closest the Ducks got in the second half was 15 points on three occasions.

Senior guard Aracely Cruz (Union City, N.J./Union Hill) was held scoreless in the first half, but rebounded with 11 points in the second half.  She was selected to the all-tournament team.  Bialko also finished in double figures with 11 points.

Stevens is back in action on Tuesday, November 25, with a 7 p.m. game at FDU-Florham.
