Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Centenary, 71-67

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior forward Mike Memmen scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Centenary College to a 71-67 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday in a non-conference men’s basketball game at the Canavan Arena.

Centenary (8-14) trailed by two points in the final minute, but junior guard Dave Street connected on a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left to give the Cyclones the lead for good, 66-65.  Memmen then came up with a steal and a layup to give Centenary a 3-point lead.  Freshman guard Andre Harris iced the win by hitting two free throws with 12 seconds left.

Stevens (6-16) had its three-game winning streak snapped.  The Ducks trailed by five points with four minutes left, but used consecutive 3-pointers by senior forward Jon Almonte (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) and freshman guard Ryan Kander (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) to take at 63-62 lead with 2:19 remaining.

Street, who was just 2-for-18 from the floor prior to his go-ahead 3-pointer, made one of two free throws to tie the game at 63-63 with 1:55 left.  Stevens then took a two-point lead when senior forward Eric Stanley (New York, N.Y./Solebury Prep) made both ends of a one-and-one with 58 seconds left.

Centenary received 14 points from junior guard Kane Fitzgerald and 13 points and nine rebounds from sophomore forward Kevlin Kennedy.

Stevens had five players in double figures.  Almonte had 15 points and six rebounds while Stanley (14 rebounds) and freshman guard Floyd Morris (East Windsor, N.J./Peddie School) had 13 points each.  Senior guard Nik Rao (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Prep) added 11 points off the bench.

Stevens returns to action on Friday, February 14, with a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference game at Manhattanville College.
