STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Keisha Cook and Debra Pasquale scored 14 points each to lead the College of Staten Island to a 74-45 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Thursday in a non-conference women’s basketball game at the Sports and Recreation Center.
Staten Island, which improved to 19-5, matched the longest winning streak in its program’s history at 14 games. Stevens, which had its six-game winning streak halted, falls to 11-10.
Staten Island scored the first seven points of the game and held an 11-2 lead at the 14:55 mark of the first half. Cook and Pasquale scored four points each during the early surge. Stevens cut the lead to 18-14 on a basket by senior guard Mia Molfino (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) with 9:46 left in the first half. But the Ducks went cold over the final nine minutes of the first half as the Dolphins ended the period on a 20-5 run. A layup by junior guard Aracely Cruz (Union City, N.J./Union Hill) with 5:47 left was Stevens’ last basket of the half. The Ducks shot just 30.0 percent (9-for-30) in the first period.
Staten Island, which shot 50 percent (16-for-32) in the second half, continued to widen the gap. The Dolphins led by as many as 40 points – 72-32 with 5:08 left – before the Ducks scored 13 of the game’s final 15 points.
Staten Island dominated the boards, holding a 54-28 rebounding advantage. Stevens failed to make a 3-pointer, going 0-for-5 from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Lauren Bialko (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) was the only Stevens player in double figures as she finished with 10 points. Cruz and Molfino, the Ducks’ top two scorers, combined for just eight points on the evening.
Stevens returns to action on Saturday, February 15, with a 2 p.m. Skyline Conference game at Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y.
