UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Freshman attack Rich Benson (Nassau, Del./Cape Henlopen) scored three goals and added two assists as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team rolled to a 15-9 win over Montclair State in a Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference game at Sprague Field.
Stevens snapped a two-game losing skid, improving to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Montclair State, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, falls to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Stevens never trailed in the game. The teams traded the first four goals with junior Brian Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) and freshman Jay Wells (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) scoring for the Ducks and Anthony Mosca and Sean Pekarsky scoring for the Red Hawks.
Stevens then scored four straight goals and eight of the next ten before halftime to take control. Benson’s goal off an assist from junior Erik Reckdenwald (Glen Aubrey, N.Y./Whitney Point) with 2:04 left in the first quarter gave the Ducks the lead for good. Sophomore Kyle Kenney (Cedarhurst, N.Y./Lawrence) scored just 26 seconds later to give Stevens a 4-2 lead after the first period.
Stevens outscored Montclair State 6-2 in the second quarter to build a comfortable 10-4 halftime lead. Freshman Stephen Pascone (Selkirk, N.Y./Albany Academy) led the Ducks with two goals in the quarter. Stevens held a commanding 37-11 advantage in shots in the first half.
For the game, the Ducks held a 61-35 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper Matt Cannon (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) had 12 saves for Stevens. Senior Vinny DeGennaro stopped 23 shots for Montclair State.
Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, April 2, when it hosts Richard Stockton College in a Knickerbocker game beginning at 7 p.m.
