HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (30-16, 35-37, 30-16, 30-16) to top-ranked Juniata College on Friday night in the semifinals of the Molten Invitational Championship - the Division III Final Four. The Ducks had their school-record 15 match winning streak snapped in the loss.
Stevens (27-9) will face the University of La Verne (Calif.) in the consolation match on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. La Verne dropped a 3-0 decision to Springfield in the first semifinal match.
Stevens (27-9) received a match-high 18 kills from freshman outside hitter Chris Bock (Orlando, Fla./University). Sophomore outside hitter Brian Woodworth (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) had 12 kills and eight digs. Freshman middle hitter Greg Higgins (Kenmore, N.Y./Kenmore West) added eight kills and two blocks
Juniata (17-7), ranked first in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Coaches Poll, controlled the match at the net, finishing with 19.5 total team blocks, compared to just four for eighth-ranked Stevens.
After dropping the opening game, Stevens managed to capture the second game, 37-35. The Ducks had 23 kills with just five errors in 45 attempts in winning the second game.
