HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior attack Mike Baumbach (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) scored five goals to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 20-3 win over Kean University on Saturday in a Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference game at DeBaun Field.
Prior to the game, the Stevens field complex was dedicated in honor of Grace and Ken DeBaun, long-time supporters of Stevens Institute of Technology and the Stevens student-athletes.
Kean (3-7, 1-4 Knickerbocker) scored the initial goal of the game with 9:33 left in the first quarter, but Stevens (8-4, 5-0 Knickerbocker) reeled off 15 straight goals over the next three quarters. Baumbach’s goal with 8:19 left in the first quarter gave the Ducks the lead for good. Stevens has now won five straight games.
Stevens scored seven goals in the third quarter to extend an 8-1 halftime lead. Baumbach, who matched his season high in goals, scored three times in the third quarter. The Ducks also received three second-half goals from freshman Tom DiLemmo (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township). Junior attack Brian Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) and freshman midfielder Nick Payne (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) had two goals and one assist each.
Freshman attack Robert Starr (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict’s Prep) had two of Kean’s three goals. Junior attack Rich Doherty (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) added a fourth-quarter goal for the Cougars.
Stevens held a 61-29 advantage in shots. Juniors Matt Cannon (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and Chris D’Urso (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) combined for 15 saves for the Ducks.
Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, April 16, when it hosts Kings Point in a 7 p.m. game that will likely determine the Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference champion and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Both teams are currently 5-0 with two conference games remaining.
