BRONX, N.Y. – Senior catcher Marlin Genao (Paterson, N.J./Paterson) highlighted a four-run fifth inning with a two-run single as Stevens Institute of Technology rallied for a 6-5 win over Lehman College on Friday in a Knickerbocker Conference baseball game.
Stevens (8-15, 7-8 Knickerbocker) also received three innings of shutout relief from sophomore right-hander Michael Carrano (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington). Carrano, who took over for starter Gerard Moreno to open the fifth inning, struck out a season-high six batters, walked just one and did not surrender a hit in earning his first win of the season (1-0).
Lehman (8-10, 7-7 Knickerbocker) built a 5-2 lead after four innings. In the top of the fifth, the Ducks loaded the bases for Genao who delivered a two-run single to cut the Lightning lead to 5-4. After a balk delivered the tying run, freshman center fielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) drove in the go-ahead run with a single.
Stevens was led by junior left fielder Ben Shaw (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) who went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run. Senior first baseman James Bailey (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) went 2-for-4. Sophomore shortstop Jeff Drobik (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) reached base in all three plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
The Stevens baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 19, when it plays a Knickerbocker doubleheader at SUNY-Old Westbury beginning at noon.
