NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Junior right-hander Jason Mires tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead Mount St. Mary College to a 3-1 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday in a Knickerbocker Conference baseball game.
Mount St. Mary (11-3, 5-1 Knick) scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Junior right fielder Kevin Rall drove in senior center fielder Brian Denisar with a two-out single in the sixth to put the Blue Knights ahead 2-1.
Stevens (3-11, 2-5 Knick) scored its only run in the top of the third. The Ducks had consecutive singles by sophomore right fielder Kevin Suders (Mapleton Depot, Pa./Mount Union Area) and senior second baseman C.J. Ecke (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) to open the inning. After the runners moved up on a groundout, Suders scored on a groundout by junior first baseman Ben Shaw (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) to give Stevens a 1-0 lead.
Mount St. Mary tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Denisar, who led off with a single, scored two batters later on a double by senior designated hitter Erik Eltz.
Suders had two of Stevens’ three hits. Mires did not allow a hit after Suders’ one-out single in the fifth. The only base runner the Ducks had over the final four innings was a leadoff walk drawn by Shaw to open the sixth. Mires, who struck out five, retired the final 12 batters he faced.
Senior catcher Marlin Genao (Paterson, N.J./Paterson) went 0-for-4 and had has 11-game hitting streak snapped in the loss.
Sophomore Joe Martin (Nutley, N.J./Nutley), the second of three Stevens pitchers, picked up the loss in relief. He gave up just two hits and two runs (one earned) in four innings.
Stevens and Mount St. Mary play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 5, at the Dobbelaar Baseball Field beginning at noon.
