HOBOKEN, N.J. – Freshman midfielder Jay Wells (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) scored three goals – two in the fourth quarter – to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 12-10 win over Cabrini College on Wednesday afternoon in a men’s lacrosse game at DeBaun Field.
The game was originally to be played at Cabrini but unplayable field conditions prompted the game to be switched to Stevens. Stevens won its fourth straight game to improve to 7-4. Cabrini falls to 6-3.
The Ducks held a slim 8-7 lead after three quarters, but took control by scoring four goals in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Wells scored just 16 seconds into the quarter and added the eventual game-winning goal with 10:16 left. Junior long stick midfielder Matt Grande (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) controlled the ensuing faceoff, went down the field and scored just 14 seconds later to give Stevens a 12-7 lead.
Cabrini closed the gap by scoring three goals in the final four minutes. Junior Michael Piccoli had two of the Cavaliers three goals.
Cabrini scored the first two goals of the game and held a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. Freshman Matt Campbell had one goal while freshman Kevin Rayer had two goals and one assist in the opening period.
Stevens claimed the lead with three straight goals at the start of the second quarter. Junior Matt Kuppe (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) scored to tie the game at 3-3 with 14:20 left in the quarter. Sophomore Kyle Kenney (Cedarhurst, N.Y./Lawrence) scored 39 seconds later to give the Ducks the lead for good. Freshman Rich Benson (Nassau, Del./Cape Henlopen) added a goal with 10:12 left to put Stevens ahead 5-3.
The teams traded the next seven goals until Stevens pulled away at the start of the fourth quarter. The Ducks maintained a 39-32 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper Matt Cannon (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) stopped 17 shots in a strong effort for Stevens. Junior Antonio Masone recorded eight saves for Cabrini.
Stevens returns to action on Saturday, April 12, when it hosts Kean University in a Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference game beginning at 7 p.m.
