Spencer Cunningham and the Stevens defense will face its toughest test to date against Messiah. |
HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Stevens men's soccer team faces its toughest challenge to date as it hosts defending national champion Messiah College on Saturday at DeBaun Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
At 3-1-2 overall, the Ducks face one of the top teams in the nation in Messiah. The Falcons are 4-0-1 and have outscored their five opponents 22-1 this season. The only blemish on Messiah's record is a 1-1 tie with Gordon in its season opener. Despite a 30-4 advantage in shots, the Falcons needed a goal in the 84th minute to salvage a tie. Messiah is currently ranked third in the Middle Atlantic region, one of the toughest regions in the country. The Falcons were ranked 17th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll.
The Stevens defense, which has yielded just two goals in six games, will be tested by Messiah. The Falcons have averaged 5.3 goals per game in their last four games. Senior forward Matt Bills leads Messiah with seven goals while sophomore Aaron Casper has added three goals and freshman Bain Rumohr has contributed two. Stevens has not allowed a goal at DeBaun Field in seven games dating to last season.
The Ducks, who earned a 1-0 win at the College of New Jersey on Wednesday, have received four goals from sophomore Brian Marks. Junior Adam Kalbermatten has three goals while junior Josh Ottinger has two goals and two assists. Senior goalkeeper Sean Stevenson has a 0.34 goals against average.
A free barbecue will be held prior to the game beginning at 3 p.m. The athletic department will give out free t-shirts to the first 50 students in attendance.
