HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior guard Mark Medvetz (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) scored 15 points to lead the United States Merchant Marine Academy to a 76-59 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday night in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game at the Canavan Arena.
With the win, Kings Point improves to 9-4, overall and 3-1 in Skyline Conference play. Stevens falls to 2-12, and 1-3 in the conference.
Stevens, which trailed by two points at halftime, regained the lead, 36-35 on a driving layup by sophomore guard Ryan Kander (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Xaverian) with 17:58 left in the second half. Kings Point then scored six straight points of the next 1:11 – two each by junior guard Josh Buck, Medvetz and sophomore forward Zach Wyatte – to take a 41-36 lead.
Stevens trailed by just four points, 46-42, with 15:07 left on a basket in the paint by junior forward Dan Jordan (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant). Kings Point responded with another six-point spurt to push the lead to double figures. Freshman guard Stephen McDade scored the first four points while senior forward Gabe Whitney added a layup at the 13:00 mark to give the Mariners a 52-42 lead. Stevens never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
Sophomore forward Michael Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) led Stevens with 15 points. Kander had 12 points and six rebounds while Jordan and sophomore guard Jimmy Dominkewicz (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) had 10 points each.
Junior forward Joe Hart had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Kings Point.
Stevens returns to action on Saturday, January 17 with a 3 p.m. Skyline Conference game at Centenary College.
