HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Senior guard Aracely Cruz (Union City, N.J./Union Hill) scored 20 points and sophomore forward Emily Weaver (Prince Frederick, Md./The Calverton School) had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 68-54 win over Centenary College on Saturday in a Skyline Conference women’s basketball game.
Stevens (6-6, 1-1 Skyline) used a big second half, breaking open a game that was tied 26-26 at halftime. Cruz, had 13 of her game-high 20 points in the second half. She was a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line in the second half and 14-for-15 for the game. Weaver had nine of her season-high 14 after the break. As a team, the Ducks were 25-for-38 at the free throw line – both season-highs.
Stevens also used full-court pressure to force Centenary into 28 turnovers. The Ducks also limited the Cyclones to just 31.7 percent shooting from the floor (19-for-60).
Junior forward Jaime Mehnert (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) and junior guard Lauren Bialko (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) were also in double figures for Stevens with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Solaris Ortiz was the only Centenary player in double figures as she finished with 16 points, 13 of which came in the first half.
Stevens is back in action on Monday, January 19, with an 8 p.m. Skyline Conference game at home against Mount St. Vincent.
