HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior forward Jeff Gilkerson scored 25 points with 13 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead New York University to a 69-65 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon in a non-conference men’s basketball game at the Canavan Arena.
NYU remains unbeaten at 7-0. Stevens lost its sixth straight, falling to 1-7.
Trailing by five points with 14:30 left, NYU used a 9-0 run in a span of three minutes to take control. Stevens led 46-41 following a jumper by sophomore forward Michael Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Trinity Pawling). The Violets scored the next nine points. Freshman Michael DeCorso scored the first two points, sophomore James Janeczek followed with a three-point play and freshman Dan Falcon scored the next four points, giving NYU a 50-46 lead with 11:26 left.
Stevens pulled to within three points (56-53) on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Garrick Todechine (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunny Slope) with 7:26 left. Gilkerson then scored six straight points to give NYU its largest lead, 62-53 with 2:59 left.
After four ties and six lead changes in the first half, NYU grabbed a 37-34 halftime lead. Stevens opened the second half with a 12-4 run in the first 5:30 to take its largest lead.
Sophomore guard Ryan Kander (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Xaverian) scored a career-high 19 points for Stevens. Collins also recorded career-highs of 17 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots. Sophomore guard Jimmy Dominkewicz (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) finished with 17 points.
Janeczek was the only other NYU player in double figures as he finished with 11 points and four assists.
Stevens returns to action on Monday, January 5, with a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference game at home against Mount St. Mary.
