POMONA, N.J. – Sophomore back Nick Gkionis (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) headed in a corner kick off the foot of freshman Craig Moquin (Breinigsville, Pa./Parkland) in the 94th minute to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Richard Stockton College on Saturday.
Stevens, ranked 12th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III poll, won an overtime game for the third time this season, improving to 12-1-1. The Ducks are 3-0-1 in overtime games. Stockton, which had an 11-game unbeaten streak snapped, falls to 9-3-2.
Stevens never trailed in the game. Junior forward Brian Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) scored in the 40th minute to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead heading into the second half. Marks took a pass from sophomore midfielder Chris McGreevy (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams), dribbled in beat Stockton goalkeeper Tim McKenna.
The host Ospreys tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by freshman forward Jeremy Cohen in the 75th minute.
Just 3:45 into the first period of sudden-death overtime, Gkionis connected on a header to the upper right corner for the game winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Celentano (Newton, N.J./Newton) stopped four shots for Stevens including a penalty kick by Scott Adams with 17:37 left in the second half (73:23). McKenna recorded two saves for Richard Stockton.
Stevens returns to Skyline Conference play this week. The Ducks travel to Hackettstown, N.J., on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game at Centenary College. Stevens then hosts the sixth-ranked United States Merchant Marine Academy on Friday, October 15, in a 7 p.m. game at DeBaun Field.
