HOBOKEN, N.J. –The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship for the third straight year by virtue of a 5-4 penalty kick shootout over the University of Scranton on Wednesday night at DeBaun Field. The game was scoreless after two periods of sudden death overtime and is officially recorded as a 0-0 tie.
The Ducks will face Hamilton College (14-1-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Clinton, N.Y. Stevens moves to 18-1-2, while Scranton closes out its season 11-7-3.
All five penalty kick shooters for Stevens – senior Kim Mirra (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley), junior Coralynn Jones (Stevensville, Mont./Stevensville), freshman Catherine Rotsides (Morristown, N.J./Morristown), senior Milia George (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and senior Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) – were successful on their attempts. With the penalty kick shootout knotted at 4-4, Barnhart connected on a shot to the lower left corner to clinch it for Stevens.
The only miss came off the foot of Scranton’s second shooter, Kelly Klingman, who hit the crossbar with her shot.
The Ducks held a 16-6 advantage in shots and 11-2 edge in corner kicks over the Royals.
Goalkeeper Erica Midttveit (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) totaled 2 saves, while Scranton’s Kim McCormick had seven.
