HOBOKEN, N.J. – Freshman guard Jean Matusiak (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) scored 16 points, 14 in the second half, and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team to a 60-55 win over FDU-Florham in a non-conference game on Wednesday night at the Canavan Arena.
With the win, Stevens improves to 3-0 on the season. FDU-Florham falls to 1-2.
Junior forward Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Villa Academy) put the Ducks ahead 56-55 with 11 seconds remaining in the game on a layup off a feed from senior forward Jaime Mehnert (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick). With 5.9 seconds on the clock, Mehnert drew a charge and the Ducks regained possession of the ball. In the last five seconds, Matusiak went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to clinch the victory for Stevens.
With 6:51 remaining in the game, the Devils held a 44-36 advantage over the Ducks. A 13-4 run in a span of 3:34 gave Stevens a 49-48 edge with freshman forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo./Longmont), guard Jackie Pannell (Bloomfield, Conn./Suffield Academy) and Matusiak scoring four points apiece.
Stevens had two other players in double digits with Mehnert finishing the game with 13 and Gambino with 12. Enright pulled down 14 rebounds, while Pannell had 13.
Stevens will be back in action Monday, November 29 at Ramapo. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
