NEW YORK, N.Y. – Forward Jason Boone led five players in double figures with 15 points as New York University cruised to a 93-55 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at the Coles Sports Center.
NYU (3-1) shot a blistering 64.8 percent (35-for-54) for the game including 71.4 percent in the first half when it sprinted out to a 52-31 lead. The Violets also held a commanding 40-22 rebounding advantage. Stevens (2-4) was held to 37.7 percent shooting from the floor (20-for-53).
Freshman forward Joseph Ayodele (Tempe, Ariz./Marcos de Niza) gave Stevens an 11-9 lead with a jumper at the 15:16 mark. NYU countered with a 20-3 run over the next seven minutes to take control. Boone had a dunk off a steal to ignite the run and then capped the spurt with layup at the 8:19 mark, giving the Violets a 29-14 lead. Six different NYU players scored during that stretch.
The Violets scored the final eight points of the first half, extending a 13-point lead to 52-31 at the break. NYU missed just three field-goal attempts in the final 10 minutes of the first half while making 10 baskets.
For Stevens, sophomore forward Tim Williams (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) matched his season-high with 14 points and also pulled down a game-high six rebounds. Sophomore guard Stephen Peters (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Storm King) added eight points and three assists off the bench.
Jeff Gilkerson scored 13 points for NYU while Jimmy Janeczek, Michael DeCorso and Bobby Serafin added 10 points apiece.
Stevens closes out its first-semester schedule on Wednesday, December 8, with a 7 p.m. non-conference game at the Canavan Arena against Drew University.
