SCRANTON, Pa. – Allison Matt scored a game-high 21 points to lead 16th-ranked Scranton to an 82-44 win over Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team in a non-conference game on Wednesday night.
With the loss, Stevens falls to 6-2 on the season, while Scranton improves to 5-1.
Scranton never trailed in the game. Stevens trailed by just one point, 17-16, on a jumper by senior guard Lauren Bialko (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) with 10:10 left in the first half. Scranton then used an 18-0 run over the next five minutes to open up a 19-point lead. Matt began the run with a jumper at the 9:48 mark. Tara Gemmel, who finished with 11 points, scored the last three in the run.
Stevens, which shot 41.7 percent in the first half (10-for-24) shot only 20 percent in the second (5-for-25). The Ducks got no closer than 18 points in the second half.
Junior forward Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Villa Academy) led the Ducks with 11 points. Senior forward Jaime Mehnert (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) and freshman guard Jean Matusiak (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King) each added eight points apiece for Stevens.
The Ducks return to action on Thursday, January 6, when they travel to Pasadena, Calif., for a 7:30 p.m. game against Caltech.
