FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Jimmy Dominkewicz (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) scored 33 points to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 67-64 win over Farmingdale State University on Wednesday night in a Skyline Conference men’s basketball game.
Dominkewicz, who has scored 37, 27 and 33 points in the last three games, lifted Stevens (6-17, 5-8 Skyline) to its third straight win. Farmingdale State drops to 10-12 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
Neither team led by more than six points in a tight game that featured eight ties and eight lead changes.
Mike Kerrigan buried a 3-pointer for Farmingdale State to tie the game at 60-60 with 1:58 remaining. Dominkewicz was fouled on the Ducks’ next possession and made the first of two free throws with 1:32 left to give Stevens the lead. He missed the second free throw and sophomore forward Michael Collins (Bronx, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) grabbed the offensive rebound. Dominkewicz was fouled on a drive and made two more free throws with 1:16 left to push the lead to 63-60. A tip-in by Collins with 17 seconds left gave Stevens a five-point lead.
Willie Samuels drew a foul for the Rams with nine seconds left and made both free throws to cut the lead to three. Farmingdale then stole the inbounds pass and Samuels converted a layup with eight second left to trim the Stevens lead to 65-64. Dominkewicz was immediately fouled with seven seconds left and calmly sank both free throws to put the Ducks ahead 67-64.
Farmingdale pushed the ball up to half court and called timeout. The Rams were able to get off a 3-pointer, but Kerrigan’s game-tying attempt bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.
Collins added 14 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots for Stevens. Sophomore guard Adam Cirnigliaro (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) played well in place of injured starter Pat McCann as he did not miss a shot and had seven points along with four assists and just one turnover. Freshman forward Stephen Peters (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Storm King) had seven points and seven rebounds while fellow freshman Tim Williams (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds.
Kenny McMillian led Farmingdale with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Stevens is back in action on Saturday, February 14, when it hosts Manhattanville College in a 2 p.m. game at the Canavan Arena.
