NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Sophomore outside hitter Chris Bock (Orlando, Fla./University) had 19 kills and 11 digs as the fourth-ranked Stevens men's volleyball team overcame a sluggish start to earn a 3-1 (26-30, 30-24, 30-26, 30-28) win over SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday in a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Metro Division match at Elting Gym.
Stevens (11-1, 2-0 NECVA Metro) hit just .100 in the opening game with 16 kills and 12 errors in 40 attempts. New Paltz was nearly flawless in claiming the first game as the Hawks had 13 kills and just two errors in 33 attempts (.333).
The Ducks bounced back and hit .343 (17-5-35) and .351 (18-5-37) in the second and third games respectively to take a 2-1 lead. Stevens escaped with a 30-28 victory in the fourth game to avoid a deciding fifth game.
Junior outside hitter Brian Woodworth (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) added 17 kills, five digs and two service aces for Stevens. Freshman middle hitter Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) added 11 kills and six total blocks. Senior setter Gerard Aro (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) had 52 assists.
Junior outside hitter Mike LaRocco paced New Paltz with 20 kills and nine digs.
Stevens is back in action on Saturday, February 7, when it participates in the Roger Williams Invitational in Bristol, R.I.
