WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic University used an 11-run first inning to defeat Stevens Institute of Technology 13-3 on Monday in a non-conference baseball game at Talbot Field. Catholic had just two hits but took advantage of six walks, three hit batsmen and three Stevens errors to jump out to the big lead.
Catholic (12-7-1) received seven strong innings from junior John Schmidt who improved to 3-0 by scattering eight hits and three runs. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Stevens (4-5) scored its three runs in the top of the sixth on a three-run home run by sophomore center fielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne).
Senior Bernie Dennis went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs batted in for Catholic. Junior Jason Funk was also 2-for-3 and drove in all of his three runs in the first inning. Sophomore Pedro Rivera added two hits and one run batted in for the Cardinals.
Stevens returns to action on Tuesday, March 16, when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa., for a 3 p.m. game against Lincoln University.
