HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior midfielders Matt Kuppe (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) and Brian Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) scored three goals each to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 22-8 win over Kean University in a Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference game on Saturday night at DeBaun Field.
Stevens, which earned its seventh straight win, improves to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in Knickerbocker play. The Ducks completed their fourth straight unbeaten season in conference games having gone 27-0 since 2001. Kean falls to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the Knickerbocker.
Stevens never trailed. After Kean sophomore Robert Starr (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict’s Prep) tied the game at 1-1 with 11:00 left in the first quarter, Stevens received consecutive goals by freshman Patrick Bailey (Manassas, Va./Osborne Park) and Kuppe to take control. The Cougars pulled to within 3-2 on a goal by senior Simeon Etta (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict’s Prep) with 5:36 left, but the Ducks responded with four goals in the last four minutes of the quarter to take a 7-2 lead.
Stevens, which held a 77-26 advantage in shots, received goals from 12 different players. Sophomores Jay Wells (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) and Rich Benson (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) had two goals and one assist apiece.
Kean received three goals from freshman attack Steve Gill (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) while Starr and Etta scored two goals each. Sophomore goalie Bruno Parente (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) stopped 30 shots in just over three quarter.
Stevens controlled possession, winning 26 of 33 face-offs. Sophomore Evan Swiker (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) won 20 of 26 and picked up 16 ground balls.
The Ducks, who are the top seed in the Knickerbocker Tournament, will host fourth seeded Manhattanville on Wednesday, April 28 at 7 p.m.
