HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Stevens men's lacrosse team received word that it will open the NCAA Division III Lacrosse Championship at home against Springfield College on Sunday, May 16 at 1 p.m.
Stevens, which carries a 12-2 record and a 10-game winning streak into the NCAA Championship, is making its fourth straight tournament appearance. Springfield, which captured the Pilgrim League championship, enters the tournament with a 13-3 overall record. The Pride has won 12 straight games since a 1-3 start.
Springfield was ranked ninth in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll as of May 3. Stevens was ranked 19th prior to an 11-10 overtime win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.
The Ducks will be playing at home for the first time in four tournament appearances. In the previous three years, Stevens has traveled to Salisbury, Gettysburg and Whittier. Sunday's game marks the third NCAA Tournament contest that will be held on the Stevens campus and the first in a men's sport. The Stevens women's soccer team has hosted first-round games each of the past two seasons.
Springfield is making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five seasons. The Pride dropped an 11-9 decision to Middlebury in its opening game last year. Springfield advanced to the quarterfinals in 2001 where it fell to Gettysburg, 16-12. The Pride captured the Division II National Championship in 1994 before moving to the Division III level.
