PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Senior forward Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) tallied three goals and an assist to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team to its first Skyline Conference win of the season, defeating St.Joseph’s-Patchogue 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
Stevens improved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the Skyline Conference, while St. Joseph’s dropped to 3-5 and 1-1 in Skyline play.
Barnhart scored the Ducks’ first goal at 9:50 unassisted and notched her second goal of the game at the 24:45 mark off a penalty kick. At 37:07 sophomore back Cristina Fulgencio (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) scored off a pass from senior midfielder Kim Mirra (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) to give Stevens a 3-0 cushion going into the second half.
St. Joseph’s got on the board at the 64:12 mark with an unassisted goal by Jessica Ragazzi, but Stevens’ sophomore forward Heather Dean (Renton, Wash./Charles Lindbergh) scored off a free kick just over ten minutes later to give the Ducks a 4-1 advantage over the Golden Eagles. Mirra and sophomore midfielder Siena York-Carr (Davis, Calif./Davis Senior) assisted on the play. Barnhart scored her third goal of the game at the 79:48 mark off a pass from freshman back Sara Roeder (Portland, Ore./Sunset) who tallied her third assist of the season. Sophomore midfielder Megan Legendre (O’Fallon, Ill./O’Fallon Township) tallied her first goal of the season at the 88:50 mark off a pass from Barnhart to lift Stevens to a 6-1 victory.
Stevens out-shot St. Joseph’s 24-13 in the game and goalie Eric Midttveit (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) stopped four shots. The Ducks return to action on Saturday, September 25, when they travel to Drew for a 1 p.m. start.
