HOBOKEN, N.J. –Senior guard Jaime Mehnert (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) netted a season-high 19 points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team pulled out its first conference win over Centenary, 69-67, on Saturday afternoon at Canavan Arena.
With the win, Stevens improves to 8-5, 1-1 in the Skyline, while Centenary falls to 2-10, 1-3 in the Skyline.
Stevens led 66-59 with 1:13 left following a pair of free throws by freshman guard Jean Matusiak (Glendale, N.Y./Christ the King). But Laura Feigus had a 3-pointer and a layup on back-to-back possessions to bring Centenary within 66-64 with 41 seconds left. After Mehnert sank a pair of free throws to push the lead back up to four points, Heather Domotor buried a 3-pointer for the Cyclones with 24 seconds left to cut the Stevens lead to 68-67. The Cyclones got the ball back following a pair of missed free throws, but Matusiak came up with a steal in traffic with three seconds left. Mehnert sank the first of two free throws, but Centenary was unable to get off a shot after calling timeout with 1.2 seconds left.
Centenary led for much of the first half. A layup by Tanyall Law with 6:59 to play put the Cyclones in front 22-16. Stevens used a 9-0 run in a span of 2:36 to surge ahead. Freshman forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) had five of her 16 points during that stretch including a layup with 4:25 left that put the Ducks ahead 25-22. Senior guard Lauren Bialko (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) scored the Ducks' last five points in the half to give Stevens a 35-28 half time advantage.
Junior forward Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Academy) also finished in double figures for Stevens, scoring 12 points.
The Cyclones had three players in double digits.
The Ducks return to action on Monday, January 17 when they travel to Mount Saint Vincent for an 8 p.m. game.
