HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 2, 2005) – Senior Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a tremendous all-around game against her hometown school as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team evened its record at 3-3 on the year with a 65-49 victory over the College of Staten Island at Canavan Arena on Friday night. Gambino poured in a game-high 22 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the floor and 8-for-8 at the foul line. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the contest.
Leading 12-6 midway through the first half, the Ducks used an 18-3 run in the span of 8:05 to take a 21-point lead with just four minutes remaining in the period. Sophomore Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo.) scored four straight points to start the run for Stevens. Gambino followed by scoring eight of the team’s next 10 points. Sophomore Rebecca Baldyga (Voorhees, N.J.) capped the burst with four points of her own. Stevens headed into the break with a 35-16 lead after holding the Dolphins to 21.4 percent shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Ducks shot 48.1 percent from the floor in the half.
After falling behind by as many as 25 points early in the second period, Staten Island finally mounted a charge as the Dolphins put together a 10-0 run in the span of 2:33 to cut the Ducks’ lead to 48-35 with 9:40 remaining in the game. Senior Kim Thompson (Staten Island, N.Y.) capped the spurt with a three-pointer from the wing. The Dolphins were unable to close the gap any further as Stevens reestablished a 20-point cushion with four minutes to play.
Freshman Dani Dudek (Rockaway, N.J.) had a solid game for the Ducks with nine points on 4-for-8 shooting. Dudek also grabbed six rebounds. Enright was 3-for-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 at the line for eight points. Sophomores Kelsea Wilks (El Sobrante, Calif.), Jean Matusiak (Glendale, N.Y.) and Baldyga chipped in with six points apiece.
Staten Island was led by Thompson, who finished with a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds). Freshman Nicole Estrada (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had eight points in the game.
Stevens connected on 14-of-17 attempts (82.4 percent) from the foul line. The Ducks also did a good job on the defensive end as they held Staten Island to 24.6 percent shooting from the field in the game. Stevens forced 22 turnovers by the Dolphins, who fell to 2-2 with the loss.
The Ducks will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Madison, N.J. to take on the Rangers of Drew University at 6 p.m.
