HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - Jessa Jones led four players in double figures with 16 points as Centenary College earned a 65-55 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in a Skyline Conference women's basketball game at the Reeves Center.
Centenary ends the regular season at 8-16 overall and 6-7 in Skyline Conference play. Stevens falls to 17-8 overall and 9-4 in the conference. The teams will meet again on Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Hoboken in the quarterfinals of the Skyline Conference tournament.
Stevens received 21 points from junior forward Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y./St. John Villa Academy) and 12 points and 11 rebounds from freshman forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo./Longmont).
Stevens was saddled by foul trouble for much of the afternoon. Four different players fouled out with two more players finishing the game with four fouls. The Ducks finished the game with no reserve players. Centenary benefitted by going 27-for-39 from the free-throw line. Stevens was just 8-for-18 from the stripe.
Following the sixth tie of the first half, Heather Domotor gave Centenary a 15-14 lead with 10:32 left on a conventional three-point play. The Cyclones never trailed the rest of the way. Leading 26-23 with 6:13 left in the half, Centenary scored the final 13 points of the half - nine from the line - to open up a 39-23 halftime lead.
Stevens got as close as five points on two occasions late in the second half, the latter coming on a layup by Gambino with 2:33 left that pulled the Ducks within 55-50. Centenary was just 8-for-15 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes, but Stevens was unable to chip away at the lead.
For Centenary, Domotor added 15 points, Ayana Way contributed 14 and Solaris Ortiz finished with a double-double - 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Stevens shot just 32.4 percent from the floor (22-for-68) and committed 20 turnovers, 17 of which came in the first half. The Ducks also shot just 44.4 percent from the free-throw line.
