HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior center fielder Kevin Wright homered twice to lead Kean University to a 12-1 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in a college baseball game at the Dobbelaar Baseball Field.
The game was the season opener for both teams. Stevens (0-1) took the initial lead when junior Gerard Moreno (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) scored on a two-out infield single by sophomore Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) in the bottom of the first inning.
Kean (1-0) tied the game in the top of the second when sophomore shortstop Perry Schatzow came home on a groundout to second base by senior right fielder Felix Urena. Wright gave the Cougars the lead with a home run to right in the top of the third inning.
Kean senior right-hander Mike Battista gave up just three hits while striking out nine in five innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Dan Zeffiro pitched the final four innings, earning the save. He allowed two hits and struck out five.
Stevens senior right-hander Kevin Suders (Mapleton Depot, Pa./Mount Union Area) allowed just two earned runs while pitching into the fifth inning.
Kean jumped on the Stevens bullpen for nine runs over the final five innings. Wright led off the seventh inning with a home run to left field. Senior left fielder Justin Nathanson also hit a two-run homer to left in the top of the eighth.
Kean received hits from 11 different players. Sandt and sophomore left fielder Eric McCormick (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) led Stevens with two hits apiece.
Stevens is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 27, when it hosts Vassar College in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
