HOBOKEN, N.J. – Sophomore midfielder Alex Richards (Beaverton, Ore./Century) scored with 41 seconds left to lift 13th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology to an 11-10 win over Connecticut College on Saturday in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game at DeBaun Field.
Richards scored his third goal of the game on an unassisted shot from the right side that beat Connecticut College goalkeeper Topher Grossman over the left shoulder. Stevens (3-0) never trailed in the second half in a game that was tied on three occasions in the final 20 minutes.
Connecticut College (0-1) trailed 8-5 early in the third quarter, but scored three straight goals in a seven-minute span to pull even. Sophomore Russ Chase, senior Dave Schwartz and junior Brendan Rampi connected as the Camels tied the game at 8-8 with 5:21 remaining in the third quarter. The teams traded goals late in the third quarter as Stevens went ahead on a goal by freshman long-stick midfielder Mike Chase (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Schwartz pulled the Camels even at 9-9 entering the final quarter.
Stevens opened up a 10-9 lead when sophomore attack Joe Van Sickle (Hampton, N.J./Peddie School) scored off an assist from freshman midfielder J.R. Oreskovich (La Costa, Calif./La Costa Canyon) with 5:51 remaining. Connecticut College tied the game for the third time in the second half when Rampi finished off a pass from sophomore Jordan Yearsly with just 1:23 remaining.
Stevens took possession of the ensuing face-off, setting up Richards’ goal just 42 seconds later. Connecticut College got the ball back following a turnover and called timeout with 17 seconds left. The Camels’ best scoring chance came on a shot by Russ Chase that sailed high with four seconds remaining.
The teams had 30 shots apiece with Stevens holding a slight 13-11 edge in face-offs. Connecticut College held a 40-29 advantage in ground balls, including 27-10 in the second half.
Sophomore goalie Jack Dunderdale (Ridgefield, Conn./Immaculate) stopped 12 shots for Stevens. Grossman had eight saves for Connecticut College.
Chase and Schwartz scored three goals apiece for Connecticut College. Freshman attack John Dolny (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) had two goals and two assists for Stevens.
Stevens returns to action on Tuesday, March 15, when it travels to Cortland, N.Y., for a 1:30 p.m. game against fifth-ranked Cortland State. The game was originally scheduled for March 9, but was postponed due to snow.
