Sophomore Mark Bielicky scored two goals in the Ducks' 8-5 loss to fourth-ranked Cortland.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior attack Kyle Lambert scored five goals as fourth-ranked SUNY Cortland earned an 8-5 win over 12th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game at the Cortland Stadium Complex.

Stevens (3-1) received two goals each from sophomore attack Mark Bielicky (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and sophomore midfielder Alex Richards (Beaverton, Ore./Century).  Senior attack Adam Hughes added two goals for Cortland State (2-0).

Cortland, which never trailed, scored the first two goals of the game and stretched its lead to 4-1 midway through the second quarter.  Junior midfielder Mike Abbott scored the initial goal with 12:26 left in the opening quarter and Lambert connected for his first goal with 6:43 left to stake the Red Dragons to a two-goal lead.  Bielicky’s first goal – with 2:04 left in the first – pulled the Ducks within 2-1.

Cortland took advantage of two Stevens miscues in scoring two goals in a three-minute span in the second quarter.  The Red Dragons intercepted two Duck clearing passes in the Stevens end, leading directly to goals by Lambert (6:51) and Hughes (3:42).  Stevens answered with goals by Richards and Bielicky in the final three minutes of the half to cut the Cortland lead to 4-3 at halftime.

The teams traded the next four goals over a 23-minute span in the second half.  Stevens pulled to within 6-5 on a goal by sophomore midfielder Patrick Bailey (Manassas, Va./Osborne Park) with 7:34 left in the fourth quarter.

Lambert provided Cortland with breathing room when he scored with 5:59 left.  He added a late goal with 1:08 left as Stevens attempted to trap and double-team in order to regain possession.

Stevens sophomore Jack Dunderdale (Ridgefield, Conn./Immaculate) and Cortland junior Ben Gaebel recorded 12 saves apiece.  Cortland held a 44-29 advantage in shots.

Stevens is back in action on Saturday, March 19, when it travels to Middlebury, Vt., to face third-ranked Middlebury College.
