HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior designated hitter Nick Parenteau homered twice and drove in five runs and freshman right-hander Tim Klein tossed a complete game shutout to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to an 11-0 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game at the Dobbelaar Baseball Field.

Rensselaer (6-3), which hit four home runs as a team, jumped ahead on a two-run home run by junior second baseman Rich Mundy in the top of the second inning.  Senior right fielder Ryan Meron hit a two-run homer in the third and Parenteau connected for a grand slam to center field in the fifth.

Parenteau’s second home run was a solo shot in the seventh.  Nine of the Red Hawks’ 11 runs came as a result of home runs.

Klein (1-0) gave up just five hits and no walks while striking out nine in picking up his first collegiate win.  He retired the final 11 batters he faced and did not allow a base runner after the sixth inning.

Sophomore Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J./Absegami) and juniors Gerard Moreno (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) and Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) each went 1-for-3 for Stevens (7-7).

Stevens is back in action on Friday, March 25, when it hosts New Jersey City University beginning at noon.  Rensselaer returns to action on Tuesday, March 29, with a 3:30 p.m. game at Oneonta State.
