Picerno, Meehan lead Baseball to 9-3 win over Centenary

AUGUSTA, N.J. – Freshman right-hander Scott Picerno (Bayonne, N.J./Hudson Catholic) pitched a complete game and allowed just six hits to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 9-3 win over Centenary College on Wednesday afternoon in a Skyline Conference baseball game at Skylands Park.

Stevens (10-7, 2-1 Skyline) erased a 3-0 deficit with a four-run third inning.  Junior center fielder Tim Meehan (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) tied the game with a three-run double.  Freshman designated hitter John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Paramus Catholic) followed with a two-out RBI single to give the Ducks a 4-3 lead.

Stevens extended its lead with two runs in the fourth, one in the seventh and two in the ninth inning.  Junior right fielder Gerard Moreno (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) had a two-run double in the fourth.  Freshman catcher David Katusa (Franklin Township, N.J./Franklin Township) drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth and sophomore first baseman Andrew Tesoriero (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) capped the scoring with an RBI single.

Centenary scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Sophomore first baseman Patrick Cassidy drove in two runs with a triple and then scored on James Surowiec’s sacrifice fly to center field.

Picerno settled down and allowed just one runner past first base after the second inning.  He retired 15 of 16 batters from the third inning up to the eighth inning.  For the game, Picerno walked one a struck out three in earning his Skyline Conference-leading fourth win.

Eight of nine Stevens batters recorded hits with seven different players scoring runs.  Tesoriero along with fellow sophomores Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa./William Allen), Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J./Absegami) and Eric McCormick (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) had two hits apiece.  The Ducks also drew seven walks and left 11 runners on base.

Rocky Ruiz (0-2) took the loss for Centenary as he allowed six runs on five hits in 3.1 innings.  He struck out four and walked four.

Stevens and Centenary play a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 9, beginning at 1 p.m.
