MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Sophomore attack Mark Bielicky (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored six goals and added two assists as 11th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology scored 10 consecutive goals during the first and second halves en route to a 21-5 win over Montclair State in Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore attack Joe Van Sickle (Hampton, N.J./Peddie School) and sophomore midfielder Patrick Bailey (Manassas, Va./Osborne Park) each added three goals for the Ducks (7-2, 2-0 KLC), who have won 29 straight Knickerbocker contests since 2001. The victory was also Stevens’ fourth straight. John Della Pesca and Brian Fischer had two goals apiece for Montclair State (5-6, 3-1 KLC), which has dropped two of its last three.
After Montclair State jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter on goals by Fischer and Sean Pekarsky, the Ducks quickly erased the lead with four straight goals. Bielicky got Stevens on the board with 3:43 to play and Van Sickle scored off a John Dolny (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) assist with 55 seconds left, tying the game. Donly put the Ducks in front for good as he notched his first goal of the game seven seconds before the end of the period.
In the second, Bielicky scored twice, the second coming with 9:49 remaining to make the score 6-3, but Della Pesca answered 19 seconds later to trim the deficit back to two. That’s when the Stevens scoring barrage started. Bielicky recorded a pair of goals around a Jay Wells (Shaftsbury,Vt./Mount Anthony Union) tally to make the score 9-4 and sophomore Alex Richards (Beaverton, Ore./Century) got one on a man-advantage for a six-goal cushion. Bielicky struck again with 13 seconds, his fourth, and Dolny capped off the first half notching his second goal eight seconds later as Stevens led 12-4 at the half.
Things continued to go well for Stevens in the third as freshman midfielder J.R. Oreskovich (La Costa, Calif./La Costa Canyon) scored 42 seconds into the period and Van Sickle had back-to-back goals for a 15-4 lead. Wells capped off the Ducks’ run with his second goal with 4:04 left in the quarter. Fischer broke the Red Hawks drought with 50 seconds to go as Stevens led 16-5 at the end of the period. Freshman Greg Duffy (Cary, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and Bailey each scored twice in the final period as Stevens scored all five goals for the final margin.
The Ducks three-goalie tandem of sophomore Jack Dunderdale (Ridgefield, Conn./Immaculate), freshman Corey Vaillancourt (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) and freshman Pat Cavanaugh (Laurel, Md./Atholton) combined for 11 saves with Vaillancourt collecting seven while Dunderdale and Cavanaugh getting two and three, respectively. Stevens out shot Montclair State 65-28 and held a 47-29 advantage in ground balls as Wells, who was 13-of-19 on faceoff attempts, registered 12.
Thomas Bowers made 23 saves under heavy pressure in goal for Montclair State.
Stevens is back in action on Wednesday, April 13, when it travels to Purchase, N.Y., for a 4 p.m. make-up game against Manhattanville.
