No. 5 Nazareth pulls away late for 13-10 win over Stevens in second round of NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Fifth-ranked Nazareth College broke open a one-goal game in the fourth quarter with three straight goals in earning a 13-10 win over 10th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.

Stevens got early goals from sophomore Patrick Bailey (Manassas, Va./Osborne Park), freshman John Dolny (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and junior Stephen Pascone (Selkirk, N.Y./Albany Academy) in a 45-second span to take a 3-0 lead. Nazareth rallied to knot the score at 3-3 before the first quarter ended.  Ryan Hotaling, Chad Amidon and Matt Aloi scored for Nazareth.

Juniors Bryan Adams and Greg Kanellis each scored twice in the second quarter as Nazareth took the lead and built a 7-3 halftime advantage.

Pascone and sophomore Mark Bielicky (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each scored twice for Stevens in the third quarter as the Ducks rallied to within one, 9-8, heading into the final 15 minutes.  Nazareth had a 9-5 lead on a pair of third-period goals from Chris Balash, but Stevens scored three times in the last two minutes of the period to close within one.

Adams scored his third goal of the game early in the fourth quarter to enable Nazareth to regain its two-goal lead, 10-8.  Sophomore Alex Richards (Beaverton, Ore./Century) answered for Stevens just 30 seconds later.  Nazareth scored the next three goals to pull away.  First Balash scored unassisted, then Hotaling scored off a pass from Bryan Coon to make it 12-9.  Kanellis made it 13-9 with an unassisted score with 2:08 left.  Freshman J.R. Oreskovich (La Costa, Calif/La Costa Canyon) closed out the scoring for Stevens with an unassisted score with 16 seconds left.

The game was even statistically as each team had 35 shots.  Stevens also held a 42-41 edge in ground balls and a 17-10 advantage in faceoffs won.  Nazareth's Alex Civalier made 12 saves, while sophomore Jack Dunderdale (Ridgefield, Conn./Immaculate) stopped five shots for Stevens.
