TROY, NY – The Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Sunday afternoon at the Sharp Courts in Troy, NY. The Ducks move to 2-3 for the season.

Sophomore Dana Bacalla (Portland, OR) and junior Jin Bai (Edison, NJ) dropped a close, 9-7 decision to Erica Sherman and Progga Das of RPI at No. 1 doubles. The freshmen duo of Whitney Bender (Tijeras, NM) and Rebecca Ryba (Old Brookville, NY) suffered their first loss of the season together at No. 2 doubles, falling to Lydia Lindhult and Andrea Dalton, 8-3. Sophomore Jacqueline Carbone (Basking Ridge, NJ) and junior Vandita Shah (Bloomfield, NJ) lost to Shani Gil and Rebecca Marus of RPI, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.

Bacalla brought the Ducks their lone victory on the afternoon, posting a 6-0, 6-0 win for the fourth time this season at No. 1 singles. She defeated Lindhult at the top spot on Sunday. Bender lost her first singles match of the season, dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Das. Sherman defeated Bai, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. Ryba took the first set against Kristen Weiss of RPI at No. 4 singles, but lost the second match, 6-2, and fell in the tiebreaker, 10-6. Andrea Dalton defeated Carbone, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot, while, Shah suffered a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Charlotte Kaplan at No. 6 singles.  

Stevens returns to action Wednesday, hosting Skyline Conference foe Mount Saint Vincent at 4 p.m. at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, NJ.
