HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 21, 2006) – Sophomore midfielder Allison Shields (Mahopac, N.J.) netted two goals as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University, 3-2, on Saturday at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. With the win, the Ducks improved to 10-6, while the Devils dropped to 10-6 with their second straight loss.
Shields put the Ducks on the board just 3:48 into the game as she collected a pass from freshman midfielder Kara Borzillo (Medford, N.J.). After Borzillo took the penalty corner opportunity, she sent a pass to Shields who was set up on the left side of the net. Shields tallied her third goal of the season on the play.
Shields increased Stevens lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute after a corner opportunity taken by freshman midfielder Erin Broderick (E.Setaukey, N.Y.). Sophomore midfielder Kerri Polidore (Garwood, N.J.) received the pass from Broderick at the top of the circle and found Shields in front of the net to tally her second goal of the day.
With three minutes remaining in the first half, Borzillo gave Stevens a 3-0 advantage. Polidore sent a pass from the right side to Borzillo who was set up in front of the net. Borzillo knocked a shot past sophomore goalie Lauren Wright (Millville, Del.) to total her seventh goal of the season.
FDU opened up the second half with a goal off a corner opportunity. Senior defender Marissa Yosen (Havertown, Pa.) sent a pass to the lower left corner and junior forward Krystle Birmingham (Pine Hill, N.J.) found the back of the net for her first goal of the game.
Birmingham brought the Devils to within one off a deflection at the 53:24 mark.
FDU had several opportunities to tie the score in the remaining ten minutes in the game. However, sophomore Stephanie Smith (Hockessin, Del.) came up big in goal and helped Stevens preserve the win. Smith totaled seven saves in the game, while Wright made four saves for the Devils.

out-shot Stevens 12-10 in the game, but the Ducks held a 9-5 advantage in corners in the contest.Stevens will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to New Paltz, N.Y. to face SUNY New Paltz at 7 p.m.
