NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 13, 2006) – Sophomore forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo.) led all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team dropped a 62-61 decision to Hunter College on Monday night. With the loss the Ducks fall to 16-7 while the Hawks improve to 14-11.
Trailing 41-31 with 15:43 remaining in the game, Hunter College used a 12-2 run in an eight-minute span to tie the game with less than eight minutes to play. The Ducks regained control over the next 1:26 to take a five-point advantage. Sophomore guard Jean Matusiak (Glendale, N.Y.) and Enright connected on back-to back jumpers and freshman guard Dani Dudek (Rockaway, N.J.) sank two free-throws to put Stevens back on top 49-44 with 6:17 remaining.
After hitting six straight points, Hunter took the lead and never trailed the rest of the way. Both teams exchanged baskets for the next three minutes until Hunter’s Topaz Robbins hit a jumper to give the Hawks a 52-50 advantage with 3:28 to play. Trailing 61-56 with 20 seconds remaining, Enright converted two free-throws to bring the game to within three. After Lindsay Meltzer was fouled, she connected on one of two free-throws to give the Hawks a four point lead with six seconds on the clock. After Gambino picked up the rebound on the missed free-throw, Dudek hit a three-pointer with three seconds remaining.
Dudek finished with 14 points and eight rebounds and senior forward Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Stevens returns to action on Wednesday, February 15 when it hosts Centenary College at 7 p.m.
