Ancona and Oreskovich Lead the Way as Men’s Lacrosse Trounces Kean, 22-1

R.J. Ancona had three goals and an assist as Stevens routed Kean, 21-1. Ancona was also 14-for-18 in faceoffs.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 29, 2006) – Sophomore attackmen R.J. Ancona (West Islip, N.Y.) and J.R. Oreskovich (La Costa, Calif.) led an offensive explosion with three goals apiece as the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team routed Knickerbocker Conference rival Kean University, 22-1, on Wednesday evening at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, N.J.  Thirteen different players scored for the Ducks and seven of them tallied at least two goals as Stevens collected its second straight win to improve to 5-2 (3-0 Knickerbocker) on the year.

Oreskovich opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 2:47 into the contest as the Ducks grabbed an early lead.  Freshman midfielder Matt Keating (Chatham, N.J.) found the back of the net with 11 minutes remaining in the quarter to give Stevens a two-goal cushion.  Junior midfielder Joe Van Sickle (Amherst, N.H.) and Oreskovich scored 29 seconds apart as the Ducks took a 4-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.

Later in the period, sophomore attack John Dolny (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) assisted on goals by sophomore defender Nick Daniello (Cross River, N.Y.) and Keating as the Ducks raced out to a 6-0 lead.  Junior midfielder Mike Tanis (Oak Ridge, N.J.) connected for the Cougars (4-4, 0-2 Knickerbocker) with 2:46 remaining in the opening stanza.

Stevens put the game out of reach with a nine-goal outburst in the second quarter.  Junior midfielder Mark Bielicky (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Ancona fueled the offensive attack with a pair of goals in the period as the Ducks went into intermission with a 15-1 lead.

Keating and Dolny lead the Ducks in scoring with five points apiece.  Keating (seven ground balls) finished with two goals and three assists while Dolny contributed a goal and four helpers.  Ancona, who was 14-for-18 in faceoffs, finished with three goals and an assist for four points.  Van Sickle and Bielicky had two goals and an assist apiece.

Meanwhile, freshman attack Andrew Richards (Beaverton, Ore.) collected two goals.  Freshman attack Eric Smith (Oswego, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist.  Senior midfielder Evan Swiker (Philadelphia, Pa.) was 7-for-9 in faceoff opportunities and grabbed five ground balls.  Junior goalkeeper Jack Dunderdale (Ridgefield, Conn.) improved to 4-2 on the year as he made three saves in 30 minutes of action.

For Kean, sophomore goalkeeper Dave Nichols (Florham Park, N.J.) was saddled with the loss as he surrendered 15 goals while making 15 saves in just over 33 minutes of playing time.

Stevens dominated the game in nearly ever statistical category.  The Ducks owned a 61-15 advantage in shots.  In the first half alone, Stevens out-shot Kean 45-5.  The Ducks grabbed 60 ground balls to just 20 by the Cougars.  Stevens was successful in 24 of 28 clear attempts and won 21 of 27 faceoffs.  The Ducks were 2-for-2 in man-up situations and even scored a man-down goal.

Stevens returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Maritime College to face the Privateers at 1 p.m.  That game will be played in Throggs Neck, N.Y.
