HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 3, 2006) – Trailing by two with six seconds remaining in the game, sophomore guard Jean Matusiak (Glendale, N.Y.) dribbled the length of the court, but was unable to get off a clean shot as the final horn sounded capping a wild last minute of the game where Kean University (17-11) claimed a 72-70 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology in an ECAC Division III Metro Women's Basketball Championship semifinal game at Canavan Arena on Friday night. Stevens, the top seed in the eight-team tournament, finishes its season at 20-9. Fifth-seeded Kean will face third-seeded Farmingdale State University in the championship game on Saturday in Farmingdale, N.Y.
Trailing by five with one minute remaining in regulation, sophomore forward Dora Enright (Longmont, Colo.) hit one of two free throws to cut the Cougars' lead to 66-62 with 55 seconds remaining. Following a turnover on an inbounds pass by Kean freshman guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.), Matusiak drained a three-pointer to bring the Ducks within one point.
Cougar freshman guard Ebony Jackson (Newark, N.J.) made two free throws to push Kean’s lead to three with 44 seconds to go. Matusiak converted a conventional three-point play to tie the score at 68-all with 32 seconds to play. Sophomore forward Chari’ Cooper (Paulsboro, N.J.) made two free throws for Kean, but senior forward Jenna Gambino (Staten Island, N.Y.) responded with a jumper in the lane to knot the score at 70-apiece. Kean pushed the ball up court and sophomore forward Kimberly Smith (Burlington, N.J.) missed a shot from in close. Jackson grabbed the offensive rebound and scored on the put-back with six seconds on the clock to give the Cougars the lead.
Enright led all scorers with 23 points and eight rebounds while Matusiak contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds. Cooper led the Cougars with 14 points in the game.
