HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 16, 2006) – Freshman forward Courtney Geddis (Jackson, N.J.) tallied her second game-winning goal of the season to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Nazareth College on Saturday at DeBaun Field. The win marks the Ducks first Empire 8 victory, running their record to 6-1 on the season and 1-1 in the league. Nazareth dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference with the loss.
Following a scoreless first half, Nazareth came out of the break with its intensity high. Within the first eight minutes of the half, the Golden Eagles registered five straight shots and two corners, but could not capitalize on the scoring opportunity.
After a timeout by the Ducks with 26:06 remaining in the game, Stevens had four straight corners within a two-minute span. At the 65:10 mark, Geddis took a shot that deflected off a defenders stick and rolled past sophomore goalie Katie May (Rochester, N.Y.) and into the left corner of the net.
Nazareth was awarded a corner with less than five minutes remaining, but they were unable to complete the play. Junior forward Kasey Robinson (Webster, N.Y.) took the last shot in the game, but it was blocked and the Ducks were able to clear the ball out of the shooting zone to hold onto the win.
Stevens out-shot Nazareth 24-13 and held a 15-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Stevens’ goaltender Stephanie Smith (Hockessin, Del.) picked up her third straight shutout win and totaled four saves in the game. May registered 13 for the Golden Eagles.
Stevens will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Richard Stockton College at 7 p.m.
