HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 28, 2007) – Tournament Most Valuable Player Scott Stoner (Wantagh, N.Y.) collected seven kills and six digs while leading the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s volleyball team past Eastern Mennonite University in three games (30-22, 30-20, 30-17) in the last match of the tenth-annual Stevens Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J.
Sophomore outside hitter/setter Joe Trinsey (Wilmington, Del.) totaled a team-high 10 kills and added six digs and two blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Tomas Bochicchio (Saint James, N.Y.) chipped in with nine kills, while senior middle hitter Will Foley (Clifton Park, N.Y.) totaled six kills and a team-high five blocks. Junior libero Josh Coffing (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the team with eight digs. Senior setter/outside hitter Michael Schulte (San Bernardino, Calif.) added 33 assists against the Royals.
All-tournament selection freshman setter Luke Yoder (Lederach, Pa.) totaled 27 assists in three games against the Ducks to lead Eastern Mennonite (3-2). Junior outside hitter Brandon Ratliff (Phoenix, Ariz.) totaled a team-high 15 kills for the Royals.
The fourth-ranked Ducks completed the tournament with a 4-0 mark as they ran their overall record to 12-3 on the season. Stevens advanced to the championship match with victories over Hunter College (30-17, 30-17, 30-19) and No. 13 Nazareth College (30-25, 25-30, 30-25, 30-25) in round robin play on Saturday. The Ducks also claimed a 30-20, 27-30, 30-22, 30-27 victory over Baruch College earlier today.
Eastern Mennonite finished the tournament with a 3-1 record as it defeated Hunter (30-20, 30-15, 30-20) and Baruch (30-26, 30-20, 32-30) on Saturday as well as Nazareth (30-24, 23-30, 30-22, 30-26) on Sunday.
Stevens will be back in action on Wednesday when the Ducks travel to Sacred Heart University for a match at 1 p.m.
