ITHACA, N.Y. (October 20, 2007) – Junior goaltender Stephanie Smith made a game-high 10 saves on Saturday afternoon at Yavits Field but it wasn't enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team was given its second consecutive loss and third defeat in its last four tries by Ithaca College in a 2-1 decision in double overtime. With the loss, the Ducks fell to 11-5 on the season with a 3-2 mark in conference action while the Bombers improved to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in Empire 8 play.
Ithaca reached the scoreboard first in the 66th-minute when freshman forward Meg Malone (South Burlington, Vt.) slapped a shot into the back of the cage off a pass on a penalty corner by sophomore forward Krista Fieselmann (Bridgewater, N.J.). Four minutes later, Stevens, which held a 12-11 advantage in penalty corners, knotted the match up at 1-1 when freshman forward Lauren Griggs tallied her 11th-goal of her freshman campaign off a feed from junior midfielder Allison Shields.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Bombers put the game away at the 99:22 mark when junior forward Elyse Green (Medford, N.J.) notched her first game-winning goal of the season on an unassisted effort. As for the Ducks, they were only 38 seconds away from sending the match into a shootout.
Smith's counterparts, sophomore goalkeepers Courtney Dowell (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Chelsea Welsh (Scotia, N.Y.) combined to stop nine shots for Ithaca. Both teams accumulated 18 shots for each side in the contest.
Head Coach Jessica Reed and her squad have now completed the road part of their schedule. They now return to the De Baun Athletic Complex for a two-game homestand to end off the season. It begins on Wednesday against SUNY New Paltz. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
