HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 6, 2007) – Sophomore forward Terrance Johnson registered the game-winning goal just 1:53 into the second overtime period on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex as the fourth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team clipped Nazareth College by a final score of 2-1. With the victory, the Ducks earned their second win against a national quarterfinalist from last season - the other squad being New York University on September 2.
After a scoreless first half, Stevens (10-0-2, 3-0 Empire 8), who out-shot Nazareth by a 25-9 count on the day, reached the scoreboard first in the 65th-minute when sophomore defender Al Lockhart scored off a deep cross-pass from senior defender Sean Bliss. Three minutes later, the Golden Flyers (4-4-3, 1-2) retaliated when junior midfielder Stephen Tychostup (Mayfield, N.Y.) found junior forward Jordan Pedersen (Homer, N.Y.) on the left side of the field. Pedersen punched a 14-yard shot into the right corner of the net to knot the game up at 1-1.
In double-overtime, Johnson found the left corner of the cage on a header attempt to win the game for the Ducks. Bliss was credited with the assist on a cross-pass from the right side of the field. Stevens' freshman goalkeeper Zach Carr stopped two shots while Nazareth freshman goaltender Jared Schreimer (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) made a game-high 11 saves. The Ducks also owned an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Tim O'Donohue and his squad complete their five-game home swing tomorrow when the Ducks host the Tigers of Rochester Institute of Technology in Empire 8 action. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. and all of the contest can be seen at www.Empire8.tv.
