HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 7, 2007) – Having lost two straight matches following a 10-0 start to the season, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team got back on the winning track on Sunday as the Ducks defeated Elmira College, 8-1, at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. Stevens swept all three doubles contests and took five of six singles flights to improve to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in Empire 8 play.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Dana Bacalla and freshman Allyson Kingman totaled an 8-1 win over juniors Kimmy Kellet (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Emily Talbot (Cazenovia, N.Y.). Juniors Whitney Bender and Rebecca Ryba added an 8-4 triumph over junior Torrie Robinson-Neff (Gloucester, Mass.) and freshman Rebecca Kingman (Hamilton, N.J.) at No. 2 doubles. In the third flight, sophomore Natalie Schloeder and freshman Kendra Appleheimer added an 8-2 victory over senior Aradhna Taneja (New Delhi, India) and sophomore Desiree Calderella (Pittsfield, Mass.).
Bacalla cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kellet at first singles. Bender earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Talbot at No. 2 singles. In a match-up of twin sisters at third singles, Allyson Kingman defeated Rebecca in straight-sets (6-1, 6-2). At No. 4 singles, Appleheimer rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win against Robinson-Neff. Ryba added a 6-4, 6-2 victory over junior Danielle Oaxaca (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) in the fifth-singles position. The Soaring Eagles (4-8, 1-7 Empire 8) earned their lone victory at sixth singles as Taneja topped Schloeder in straight sets (6-4, 6-0).
Stevens will play its final regular-season match of the fall on Wednesday when it takes on Ramapo College at 3:30 p.m. That contest will be played in Mahwah, N.J.
