No. 20 Kean Shuts Out Baseball in Home Opener

Sophomore Alex Sota made his first appearance of the 2007 season against Kean.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 24, 2007) – Senior Joseph Augustine (Highland Park, N.J.) tossed a one-hitter to lead No. 20 Kean University past the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team, 4-0 on Saturday at Dobbelaar Baseball Field in Hoboken, N.J. 

Sophomore Alex Sota (Lancaster, Pa.) took the loss as he allowed two runs and five hits while walking two batters and striking out one in four innings of work.  Senior Jim Waterman (Mullica Hill, N.J.) surrendered one hit, one walk and a run in three innings for the Ducks.  Junior Mike Ivey (Budd Lake, N.J.) gave up one run on two hits, while striking out one and walking one in one inning.  In his first collegiate game, freshman Gerald DiMaso (Holmdel, N.J.) stuck out one batter in one inning of work.

Junior Dan Mattonelli (Hamilton, N.J.) led the Cougars with four hits on the day and scored a run.  Junior Mike DeLaRosa (Newark, N.J.) opened up the season with a homerun and senior Joseph D’Andrea (Hamilton, N.J.) had two runs scored for Kean, who opened up the season 1-0 with the win.

The Cougars scored two runs in the first frame as DeLaRosa led off the inning with a solo homerun to centerfield.  After D’Andrea walked, Mattonelli ripped a single to left field that would advance D’Andrea to third on the play.  D’Andrea scored on the next play when sophomore Mike Shymanski (Edison, N.J.) grounded into a double play.   

Kean tacked on another run in the fifth inning.  D’Andrea led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Mattonelli.  D’Andrea would later score on a wild pitch by Waterman.  The Cougars added one more run in the eighth inning.

Freshman Russ Grimes (South Brunswick, N.J.) had the lone hit for the Ducks in the ninth inning. 

Stevens will be back in action on Sunday, March 4 as the Ducks host Skidmore College in a doubleheader starting at noon.
