John Jay Edges Stevens Baseball, 7-4

Senior Eric McCormick led the Ducks with three hits and two runs against John Jay.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 21, 2007) – John Jay College scored five runs on four hits in the top of the eighth inning as the Bloodhounds claimed a 7-4 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team on Wednesday in Hoboken, N.J.  The Ducks fell to 2-9 on the season, while John Jay improved to 2-5 with the win.

Stevens jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning as junior David Katusa (Franklin Township, N.J.) and freshman Eddie Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J.) scored after leading off the frame with back-to-back walks.  Senior Eric McCormick (Edison, N.J.) and sophomore Joe Gunshor (Ridgefield, Conn.) picked up the Ducks’ two hits during the inning.

In the top of the third inning, John Jay scored one run on two outs and two errors by the Ducks.  After sophomore John Massoni (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached base on an error he advanced to second on a single by senior James DeCesare (Staten Island, N.Y.).  Senior Henry Chao (Woodside, N.Y.) singled to advance the runners and Massoni scored the Bloodhounds first run of the game on an error by sophomore Alex Sota (Lancaster, Pa.).

Stevens tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by McCormick.

John Jay answered back with a run in the seventh inning when Massoni scored on a double by DeCesare.

The Bloodhounds took the lead for good in the eighth inning on a grand slam by senior John DeCrescenzo (Brooklyn, N.Y.).  Senior Joseph Ayala (Bronx, N.Y.), junior Kenneth Sepulveda (Valley Stream, N.Y.), sophomore Timothy Murphy (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and senior Gonzalo Gonzalez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) all scored during the five-run inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, McCormick led off with a single.  Freshman Russ Grimes (South Brunswick, N.J.) followed with a walk and Gunshor singled to left field to load the bases for senior Adam Sandt (Allentown, Pa.).  Freshman Anthony Cestaro (Paramus, N.J.) came into the game to relieve Massoni and walked in Sandt, which brought the Ducks within three, 7-4.  Junior John Frustaci (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) struck out for the first out and senior Andrew Tesoriero (Dunedin, Fla.) made the second out of the inning on a fly ball to right field.  Senior Ryan Birkenstock (Smithville, N.J.) grounded out to end the game.

McCormick went 3-for-5 and scored two runs for the Ducks, while Gunshor picked up four hits on the day.

DeCesare had three hits for the Bloodhounds.  DeCrescenzo had two hits and scored one run and Massoni scored two runs for John Jay.  Massoni also picked up the win as he gave up six hits and two runs over three innings of work.

Stevens will open up Skyline Conference competition when it hosts Maritime College in a doubleheader on Saturday.  The first game will begin at noon.
